The RWTH Aachen University is one of the German Federal Government’s Universities of Excellence and recognizes the need for education as an enabling factor in their implementation of EU Directive 2010/63. Therefore, we are initiating a new Master programme, “M.Sc. in Laboratory Animal Science” with the 3Rs and EU 2010/63 at its core. The implementation of EU 2010/63 not only benefits animal welfare but positions the EU as world-class research base for the agricultural, environmental and medical sciences. Skilled scientists play an important role in ensuring the principles of EU 2010/63 are central in all experiments. In order to fully implement this directive, research leaders need to have access to high quality training and education, encompassing the latest science results as wells as ethical standards. Detailed and specialist knowledge of laboratory animal science, bases on the latest scientific discoveries, to deal with complex experimental methodology and conduct independent research. Ability to independently plan, conduct, evaluate, and improve animal experiments, under consideration of the latest ethical criteria and species appropriate animal husbandry.
